Germany
There’s no escaping the fact that Germany is saddled with a bit of an image problem. For too long, too many German producers have been happy to pump out lack lustre, bargain-basement sugar water, wines that compromised the reputation of the superb quality being produced elsewhere in the country. There are, however, reasons to believe Germany’s fortunes are about to change. For one thing, the country is perfectly placed to take advantage of concerns about alcohol levels. While producers in warmer climes have to intervene with equipment, German wines are naturally low in alcohol – you can find perfectly ripe concentrated wines at 9,5% and lower. Another reason for optimism is that German wines are stylistically in tune with what the market is looking for. The rise of Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc has shown just how big an appetite there is for the kind of light, crisp, fresh whites that are Germany’s stock in trade, whether produced from Pinot Grigio itself, or from Germany’s greatest grape variety, Riesling. The growing acceptance of Riesling from the New World, could also play into German hands. As consumers develop a taste for the searing acidity, citrus fruit flavours and sheer versatility of the variety, they will surely return to the wines featured here prove.
